We propose that everyone, every family, every prayer group take time out to pray for the poor souls in Purgatory that by our prayers we may free as many souls as possible into the Glory of Heaven that they may join with others already there and together sing a song of praise for our Eternal Father, our Lord and Savior Jesus, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.  That by the help of the Holy family, our Blessed Mother the Virgin Mary, St, Joseph and Jesus Christ we gather the strength, the time and the prayers necessary to free all souls from the place of purging through many hours of prayer together from each of our homes, businesses or anywhere we are at any time.  Any place safe is a good place to pray from at all times for the relief of souls so don't let anything stop us from doing so.  God Bless the souls in Purgatory and God Bless those who pray for them and at the same time may the souls we release by our prayers also then pray for us.  There are many examples of released souls obtaining many graces and favors for those who prayed for them in their gratitude and we pray you also are one who can obtain the prayers of a released soul for your needs and wants.  May God bless us all, Amen.

Have you lost a loved one who passed away, or know someone who has? Prayers for souls in purgatory can help them! While we can derive great comfort from the hope that our loved ones are enjoying Eternal Life with God, it never hurts to pray for their souls in any case.

In purgatory, the souls of many of those who have died in God’s grace undergo purification so that they may enter heaven.

The Prayer of St. Gertrude, (pictured above), is one of the most famous of the prayers for souls in purgatory. St. Gertrude the Great (pictured at left) was a Benedictine nun and mystic who lived in the 13th century. According to tradition, our Lord promised her that 1000 souls would be released from purgatory each time it is said devoutly.

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.

Many of the Fathers of the Church, such as St. Augustine and St. John Chrysostom, considered prayers for souls in purgatory to be essential. The church has endorsed the doctrine of purgatory from the Councils of Florence and Trent in the 15th and 16th centuries right up through
Vatican II in the 1960’s.

The most famous scriptural reference, among others, concerning these prayers comes from the Old Testament where it is called “a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins” (2 Macabees 12:46).

November is traditionally an especially important month to pray for those in purgatory, and many visit the graves of the departed on All Souls' Day, November 2nd, as shown in this painting on the right.
While the sacrament of penance (confession) is essential for the forgiveness of sins, purgatory may still be necessary for many of us to satisfy the temporal punishment still due for venial and forgiven mortal sins.

To get a better handle on what this means, think of a kid who breaks a window while playing ball. He can, and should, apologize to the person whose window has been broken, but either he or his parents, (or both!) still have
to pay to fix it!

While the souls in purgatory can do nothing for themselves, their purification "pays for the damages" of their sins. It makes whatever restitution remains for these sins to God.

For another good way to look at it, think of your soul at baptism as being bright white. In your daily life it picks up bits of grime from sin, much like snow in a city a few days after a winter storm.

Even with frequent confession many of us still need purgatory to really get our souls really spotless. Purgatory is more than just some sort of Divine Detergent, however. It prepares souls for their heavenly home!

Purgatory has been described, at times rather poetically, as a “cleansing fire” that burns away the dross of sins on our souls. St. Paul wrote those of being saved “yet so as through fire” (1 Cor 3:15), and whether or not the soul endures a literal fire, its purification does involve suffering.

Thus, when it comes to purgatory the expression “No pain, no gain!” seems apt. The time each soul spends there, and the severity of the pains it experiences, varies.

However, our prayers for these souls can help alleviate their sufferings and help them reach heaven more quickly. Although they can no longer pray for themselves, they can and do pray for us as well out of gratitude!

In addition to saying prayers for souls in purgatory such as these, we can help them by having masses said for the departed and by engaging in works of charity and sacrifice on their behalf.

Also, as Patrick Madrid, the well known author and lecturer, has noted in this excellent article, the degree of grace with which we bear our own misfortunes, offering them up to God for the forgiveness of sins, can shorten whatever time in purgatory we ourselves might face. Here are two other good prayers for souls in purgatory:

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord; And let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen

O Lord, who art ever merciful and bounteous with Thy gifts, look down upon the suffering souls in purgatory. Remember not their offenses and negligences, but be mindful of Thy loving mercy, which is from all eternity. Cleanse them of their sins and fulfill their ardent desires that they may be made worthy to behold Thee face to face in Thy glory. May they soon be united with Thee and hear those blessed words which will call them to their heavenly home: "Come, blessed of My Father, take possession of the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world."

Keep in mind, however, that for the souls in purgatory there is great joy as well as pain. They know for certain they are bound for heaven! St. Catherine of Genoa wrote of the “flame of love” in purgatory removing what she called “the rust and stain of sins” and filling souls there with an intense longing for God’s eternal embrace. Talk about a burning desire!

Remember that our prayers for souls in purgatory, along with our sacrifices and sufferings bared with grace, can shorten their time there (and perhaps ours as well). Christmas is known to be one of the biggest days of the year for the release of souls from purgatory to heaven. What better gift can we give them than our prayers?

As we draw closer to You, we seek to share the Good News of Your powerful life-giving Love. In this month of the Holy Souls, we pray for all the faithful departed, and especially for the relatives, friends, and neighbors who brightened our lives.

(here pause to mention those you wish to remember)

Through the intercession of Mary, the Mother of God, and of St. Therese of the Child Jesus, I commend them to Your Divine Mercy. May they welcome these souls into Your heavenly garden. Tender God of Mercy, may these souls, all who sleep in Christ, and all who seek You with a sincere heart, find in Your Presence light, happiness, and peace. Lead them into the fullness of the resurrection and gladden them with the light of Your Face. Amen.

Prayer to the Holy Souls in Purgatory

O, Holy Souls in Purgatory, you are the most certain heirs of heaven. You are most dear to Jesus as the trophies of His Precious Blood and to Mary, mother of mercy. Obtain for me through your intercession the grace to lead a holy life, to die a happy death, and to attain to the blessedness of eternity in heaven.

Dear suffering souls, who long to be delivered in order to praise and glorify God in heaven, by your unfailing pity help me in the needs which distress me at this time, particularly (name your needs), so that I may obtain relief and assistance from God.

In gratitude for your intercession, I offer to God in your behalf the satisfactory merits of my prayer and work, my joys and sufferings of this day (week, month, or whatever space of time you wish to designate). Amen.

Attend Mass and have a Mass offered for them, if at all possible. Offerings of the Precious Blood and the Way of the Cross are also powerful means of helping them and obtaining their help.

Prayer for the Most Neglected Souls

Jesus, for the sake of the agony that You endured during Your fear of death in the Garden of Gethsemane, at the Scourging and Crowning, on the way to Mt. Calvary, at Your Crucifixion and at Your Death, have mercy on the souls in Purgatory and especially on those who are completely forgotten! Deliver them from their bitter pains, call them to You and embrace them in Your Arms in Heaven!

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary

Lord, grant them eternal rest. Amen.

O Lord, Jesus Christ, through the Sacred Blood that You shed during Your fear of death in the Garden of Gethsemane, please deliver the souls of Your faithful from the sufferings of the fires of Purgatory, in particular those who are most neglected, and lead them to their place in Your Splendor to glorify and praise You in eternity.

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary

O Lord, Jesus Christ, through the Sacred Blood that You shed during Your merciless flogging, please deliver all the souls of the faithful, in particular those who are closest to their liberation, and lead them to seeing You so that they may glorify and praise You in eternity.

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary

O Lord, Jesus Christ, through the Sacred Blood that You shed during Your painful Crowning, please deliver all souls of the Christian faithful from the dungeon of Purgatory, in particular those who would have to suffer there very much longer, and lead them into the Blessed Community of the Chosen, so that they may glorify and praise You in eternity.

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary

O Lord, Jesus Christ, through the Sacred Blood that You shed during Your gruesome Crucifixion, please deliver all the souls of the departed, in particular those of my father, my mother, my brothers and sisters, my relatives, my benefactors, and lead them to eternal joys, so that they may glorify and praise You in eternity.

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary

O Lord, Jesus Christ, through the Sacred Blood that poured from Your Blessed Side, please deliver all Poor Souls from Purgatory, in particular those who during their lives especially served Your Blessed Virgin Mother, and lead them to Your Eternal Glory, so that they may glorify and praise You in eternity.

Chaplet for the Poor Souls in Purgatory

Using a regular rosary, on the large beads we pray:
O Poor Souls, draw the fire of God's Love into my soul, to reveal Jesus crucified in me here on earth rather than hereafter in Purgatory.

On the small beads, we pray: Crucified Lord Jesus, have mercy on the souls in Purgatory.

Pray at the end, 3 times:
Glory be to the Father.....

Rosary for the Poor Souls in Purgatory

Here we pray the Sorrowful Mysteries. Before each decade, we pray what concerns the particular mystery, and instead of ending the decades with Glory Be..., we pray:
Lord, grant them eternal rest and let perpetual light shine upon them!

Begin the Rosary normally, and then before the first decade is prayed, but after the 1st Sorrowful Mystery is stated, pray:
Lord, Jesus Christ, through Your bloody sweat of fear that You shed on the Mount of Olives, we ask You to have mercy on the Poor Souls in Purgatory. Deliver them from their fear and pain and console them with the cup of heavenly comfort!

Before the second decade is prayed, but after the 2nd Sorrowful Mystery is stated, pray:
Lord Jesus Christ, through Your painful Scourging which You tolerated so patiently for us sinners, we ask You to have mercy on the Poor Souls in Purgatory. Retract from them the pain of Your anger and give them eternal rest!

Before the third decade is prayed, but after the 3rd Sorrowful Mystery is stated, pray:
Lord Jesus Christ, through Your painful Crowning which You suffered so patiently for us sinners, we ask You to have mercy on the Poor Souls in Purgatory, and give them the crown of eternal delight!

Before the fourth decade is prayed, but after the 4th Sorrowful Mystery is stated, pray:
Lord Jesus Christ, through Your painful Carrying of the Cross, which You suffered so patiently for us sinners, we ask You to have mercy on the Poor Souls in Purgatory. Remove from them the heavy burden of suffering and lead them into eternal peace!

Before the fifth decade is prayed, but after the 5th Sorrowful Mystery is stated, pray:
Lord Jesus Christ, through Your painful Crucifixion, which You suffered so patiently for us sinners, we ask You to have mercy on the Poor Souls in Purgatory. Turn Your Holy Face toward them and let them today be in Paradise with You!

After praying the last decade, we pray:
Lord Jesus Christ, through Your five Holy Wounds and through all of Your Sacred Blood that You shed, we ask You to have mercy on the Poor Souls in Purgatory, and in particular for our parents, relatives, spiritual guides, and benefactors. Heal their painful wounds and let them enjoy and participate fully in Your Salvation. Amen.

Prayer of Sacrifice for the Poor Souls

Almighty, Eternal God! Because it is Your Will that we pray for the Poor Souls, I offer You, through Mary's most unblemished hands, all the Masses that are celebrated today, for Your highest honor and for the redemption of the souls in Purgatory. Humbly, I beg of You, erase their guilt through the overly rich merits of Your Most Beloved Son and have mercy on them. For the restitution of the praise, the love, the honor, the thanks, and the merits that these souls neglected to show and to gather, I offer You all the praise, the love, the honor, the thanks, and the troubles of Your Son through which He honored You while here in the world.

In reparation for all neglects and tepidity, which these souls committed, I offer You the glowing zeal with which Your Son did all His works here on earth and which are now renewed and brought to You in all Holy Masses.

In reparation for all mistakes and all that was left undone by these souls, I offer You all virtues which Your Son practiced in totality and which He now still practices and completes in all Holy Masses.

For the cleansing of all stains of sin that these souls still show, I offer You the Sacred Blood which Your Son shed while here on earth and which He now renews and continues in all Holy Masses.

As discharge from all punishments and torments, which these souls endure, I offer You the bitter Passion and Death of Your most Beloved Son, which He now renews and continues in all Holy Masses.

For their rescue from the burning dungeon, I offer You the infinite merits which Your Son earned on earth and which He now still exercises and distributes in all Holy Masses.

Finally, in order to do enough to fulfill Your strict justice, I offer You all virtues and merits which the entire life, suffering, and death of Your most Beloved Son, His holiest Mother, all saints and chosen ones who together suffered more than the dear Poor Souls left undone. Amen.

Sevenfold Prayer for the Poor Souls

First Prayer:
Lord, Almighty God, through the Sacred Blood which Your Divine Son shed in the Garden of Gethsemane, I ask You to free the souls in Purgatory, in particular those who are most neglected. Lead them into Your Glory so that they praise and glorify You in eternity. Amen.

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary; Lord, grant them eternal peace.

Second Prayer:
Lord, Almighty God, through the Sacred Blood which Your Divine Son shed during the cruel Scourging, I ask You to free the souls in Purgatory, in particular those who stand the closest to the entrance to Your Delight. Let them begin to praise and glorify You now in eternity. Amen.

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary; Lord, grant them eternal peace.

Third Prayer:
Lord, Almighty God, through the Sacred Blood which Your Divine Son shed at the painful Crowning of thorns, I ask You to free the souls in Purgatory, in particular those in most need of our intercession. Do not let them wait any longer to praise and glorify You in eternity. Amen.

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary; Lord, grant them eternal peace.

Fourth Prayer:
Lord, Almighty God, through the Sacred Blood which Your Divine Son shed in the streets of Jerusalem as He carried the Cross on His Holy Shoulder, I ask You to free the souls in Purgatory, in particular the one who in Your Eyes has the greatest merits so that he can, from the high and glorious throne that awaits him, praise and glorify You in eternity. Amen.

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary; Lord, grant them eternal peace.

Fifth Prayer:
Lord, Almighty God, through the Sacred Flesh and Blood of Your Divine Son, Jesus Christ, which He Himself on the evening before His Death offered to His beloved apostles as food and drink, which He thereby left behind as continuous Offering and life-giving Sustenance for the faithful of the entire Church, I ask You to free the souls in Purgatory, in particular the one who honored this Secret of His Infinite Love the most, so that he with Your Divine Son and the Holy Spirit may, through this Holy Sacrament, praise and glorify You in eternity. Amen.

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary; Lord, grant them eternal peace.

Sixth Prayer;
Lord, Almighty God, through the Sacred Blood that Your Divine Son shed from His Hands and Feet while on the beam of the Cross, I ask of You to free the souls in Purgatory, in particular the one for whom I must pray the most. Do not let that one stay there any longer due to my fault so that he may praise and glorify You in eternity. Amen.

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary; Lord, grant them eternal peace.

Seventh Prayer:
Lord, Almighty God, through the Sacred Blood and Water which flowed from the Side of Your Divine Son in front of the eyes of His Holy Mother and to her greatest anguish, I ask You to free the souls in Purgatory, in particular the one who honored the highest Mother of Heaven the most intimately. Let him soon enter Your Glory in order to praise and glorify You with Mary in eternity. Amen.

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary; Lord, grant them eternal peace.

Lord's Prayer for the Poor Souls, as given to St. Matilda

OUR FATHER WHO ART IN HEAVEN: We most humbly beseech You--good, merciful and eternal Father--forgive the Poor Souls who You Yourself have taken as Your children, who did not love You and who pushed You away from them and neglected to give You sufficient honor. As reparation and penance I offer You all the love and good deeds of Your most beloved Son, Jesus Christ, Our Lord.

HALLOWED BE THY NAME: I most humbly beseech You--good, merciful and eternal Father--forgive the Poor Souls who did not give glory to Your Name, who often spoke unworthily or thoughtlessly. As reparation and penance I offer You all the sermons with which Your most beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, honored Your Name while here on earth.

THY KINGDOM COME: We beseech You most humbly--good eternal and merciful Father--forgive the Poor Souls who did not attend to Your kingdome with a burning love and a yearning wish but who often enriched themselves with earthly goods. As reparation and penance, I offer You the great offering that Your most beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, made so that all can be taken into Your kingdom.

THY WILL BE DONE, ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN: We beseech You most humbly--good, eternal and merciful Father--forgive the Poor Souls who did not serve Your Will but often followed their own will and who thereby did not do Your Will. As reparation and penance, we offer You the Holy and Divine Heart of Your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and its total will service.

GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD AND FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US: We beseech You most humbly--good, eternal and merciful Father--forgive the Poor Souls who offered no resistance to big temptations but who fell to the urgings of evil and into ruin. As reparation and penance we offer You the obedience, the tiring work, all the bitter sufferings and the death of Your most beloved Son, Jesus Christ Our Lord.

AND DELIVER US FROM EVIL: We most humbly beseech You--good, eternal and merciful Father--forgive the Poor Souls and lead them as well as our souls, through the merits of Your most beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, into the kingdom of Your Holiness, which You Yourself are. Amen.

To Our Lady of Perpetual Help

O Mother of Perpetual Help, grant that I may ever invoke thy most powerful name, which is the safeguard of the living and the salvation of the dying. O purest Mary, O sweetest Mary, let thy name henceforth be ever on my lips, for in all my needs and in all my temptations, I shall never cease to call on thee, ever repeating thy Sacred Name, Mary, Mary. O what consolation, what sweetness what confidence, what emotion, fills my soul whenever I think of thee. But I will not be content with merely thinking of thee, let my love for thee, prompt me ever to Hail thee, oh Mother of Perpetual Help. Amen

Chaplet for the Faithful Departed

O Lord, my Creator and Redeemer, I believe that in Your justice You have willed purgatory for those who pass into eternity before having completely atoned for their sins. And I believe that in Your mercy You accept suffrages, especially in the sacrifice of the Mass, for their comfort and liberation.

Enliven my faith and grant me sentiments of compassion towards these suffering brethren.

Eternal rest, grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace. Amen.

O Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, through the intercession of Mary and all the saints, please free from purgatory the faithful departed.

I pray you, O St. Michael, prince of the heavenly army, take them into the eternal light which was promised by God to Abraham and his descendants.

I offer You, Lord, sacrifices and prayers of praise. Accept them on behalf of those whom we commemorate this day. Admit them into the eternal light and joy.

Eternal rest, grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace. Amen.

O good Master Jesus, I entreat You for the sake of all to whom I am bound by motives of gratitude, justice, charity, and relationship: my parents, brothers and sisters, spiritual and material benefactors, the members of our Congregation and my relatives.

I recommend to You the forgotten persons, those who were more devoted to You, to the Blessed Virgin, persons who on earth had great responsibility: priests, the authorities, superiors, religious. Call them soon to eternal salvation.

Eternal rest, grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace. Amen.

I thank You, O Jesus divine Master, for having come down from heaven and redeemed the human race from so much evil with Your doctrine, sanctity and death. I pray You for the dead who are in purgatory because of the propagation of evil through the press, radio, television, and the motion picture industry.

I believe that they, once freed from their sufferings and admitted into eternal happiness, will pray for the modern world so that all the means given for the elevation of this present life may be used for the attainment of everlasting life.

Eternal rest, grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace. Amen.

O merciful Jesus, for the merits of Your sorrowful passion and for the love You have for me, I beseech You to forgive me the punishments I have merited for the present or future life by my many sins.

Grant me the spirit of penance, delicacy of conscience, hatred for any deliberate venial sin, and the necessary dispositions to gain indulgences.

I bind myself to help the poor dead as much as I can, and You, O infinite Goodness, give me an ever-increasing fervor so that when it is time for me to leave this world, I shall be admitted at once to contemplate You forever in heaven.

Eternal rest, grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace. Amen.

Novena For The Holy Souls In Purgatory
DAY ONE
Manifold are the sufferings, which those blessed souls must endure, but the greatest of all is the reflection that their sins in life are the cause of their present torments.

Jesus, my Savior I have so often deserved to be cast into Hell how great were my suffering if I were now cast away and obliged to think that I myself had caused my damnation. I thank Thee for the patience with which Thou hast endured me. My God, I love thee above all things and I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee because Thou art infinite goodness. I will rather die than offend Thee again. Grant me the grace of perseverance have pity on me and at the same time on those blessed souls suffering in Purgatory. Mary, Mother of God, come to their assistance with thy powerful intercession.

(Pray 1 Our Father and 1 Hail Mary for the Holy Souls in Purgatory each day.)

DAY TWO
The second pain which causes these holy souls much suffering, is the time lost in life, when they might have gained merits for Heaven; and the thought that they are unable to repair this loss, because the time of life and merit is passed.

Woe to me, unhappy being, so many years have I already spent on earth and have earned naught but Hell! I give Thee thanks, O Lord, for granting me time even now to atone for my sins. My good God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee. Send me Thy assistance that I may apply the time yet remaining to me for Thy love and service; have compassion on me, and, at the same time, on the holy souls suffering in Purgatory. O Mary, Mother of God, come to their assistance with thy powerful intercession.

(Pray 1 Our Father and 1 Hail Mary for the Holy Souls in Purgatory each day.)

DAY THREE
Another great pain of the holy souls is caused by the hideous vision of their guilt, for which they now suffer. In this life the hideousness of sin is not seen as in the life to come; and this is one of the greatest sufferings of Purgatory.

O My God! because Thou art infinite goodness, I love Thee above all things, and repent with my whole heart of my offenses against Thee. Grant me the grace of holy perseverance. Have compassion on me, and, at the same, on the holy souls suffering in Purgatory. And thou, Mary, Mother of God, come to their assistance with thy powerful intercession.

(Pray 1 Our Father and 1 Hail Mary for the Holy Souls in Purgatory each day.)

DAY FOUR
The pain that still more afflicts these holy souls, the spouses of Jesus, is the thought of having, during life, displeased by their sins that God Whom they so ardently love. Some penitents have felt so much pain and sorrow in thinking of having, by their sins, offended so good a God, that they died of grief. The souls in Purgatory understand far better than we do, the claims that God has to our love; they love Him with all their strength. Hence, at the thought of having offended Him during life, they experience pain that surpasses all other pain.

O My God! because Thou art infinite goodness, I am sorry with my whole heart for having offended Thee. I promise to die rather than ever offend Thee more. Give me holy perseverance; have pity on me, and have pity on those holy souls that burn in the cleansing fire and love Thee with all their hearts. O Mary, Mother of God, assist them by thy powerful prayers.

(Pray 1 Our Father and 1 Hail Mary for the Holy Souls in Purgatory each day.)

DAY FIVE
Another great suffering is caused these holy souls by the ignorance of the time of their deliverance. They are certain of being one day being released, yet the uncertainty of the time when their purgatorial term will have ended gives them great pain.

Woe to me, unhappy being, if Thou, O Lord, hadst cast me into Hell; for from that dungeon of eternal pain there is no deliverance. I love Thee above all things, O infinite God and I am sincerely sorry for having offended Thee again. Grant me the grace of holy perseverance. Have compassion on me, and, at the same time, on the holy souls suffering in Purgatory. O Mary, Mother of God, come to their assistance with thy powerful intercession.

(Pray 1 Our Father and 1 Hail Mary for the Holy Souls in Purgatory each day.)

DAY SIX
The holy souls are, indeed, comforted by the recollection of the passion of Jesus Christ, and the Holy Sacrament of the Altar, since they know they are saved by the passion of Jesus Christ, and have received, and still receive, so much consolation from Holy Masses and Holy Communion. Nevertheless, they are greatly pained by the recollection of their ingratitude for these two great gifts of the love of Jesus Christ.

O my Divine Redeemer, Thou didst die for me on the Cross, and hast so often united Thyself with me in Holy Communion, and I have repaid Thee only with ingratitude. Now, however, I love Thee above all things, O supreme God; and I am more grieved at my offenses against Thee than at any other evil. I will rather die than offend Thee again. Grant me the grace of holy perseverance. Have compassion on me, and, at the same time, on the holy souls suffering in Purgatory. Mary, Mother of God, come to their aid with thy powerful intercession.

(Pray 1 Our Father and 1 Hail Mary for the Holy Souls in Purgatory each day.)

DAY SEVEN
A further great sorrow of these holy souls consists in their ardent desire for the beatific vision. Slowly and painfully the moments of their purgatorial imprisonment pass by; for, they love God deeply, and desire to be delivered from their sad prison in order to praise Him forever.

O God, Father of Mercy, satisfy this their ardent desire! Send them Thy holy Angel to announce to them that Thou, their Father, are now reconciled with them through the suffering and death of Jesus, and that the moment of their deliverance has arrived.

(Pray 1 Our Father and 1 Hail Mary for the Holy Souls in Purgatory each day.)

DAY EIGHT
Another bitter sorrow of these souls is caused by the reflection that God had distinguished them by so many graces not granted to others, and that they compelled Him, by their sins, to condemn them to these sufferings, and that they had deserved Hell, and were pardoned and saved only by the mercy of God.

O my God! I also am one of these ungrateful beings, having received so much grace, and yet despised Thy love and deserved to be cast by Thee into Hell. But Thy infinite goodness has spared me until now. Therefore, I now love Thee above all things, and I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee. I will rather die than ever offend Thee. Grant me the grace of holy perseverance. Have compassion on me and, at the same time, on the holy souls suffering in Purgatory. Mary, Mother of God, come to their aid with thy powerful intercession.

(Pray 1 Our Father and 1 Hail Mary for the Holy Souls in Purgatory each day.)

DAY NINE
Great are all the sufferings of the holy souls; the fire, the grief, the darkness, the uncertainty of the time of their deliverance from prison; but the greatest of all these sorrows is this, that these holy souls are separated from their divine Spouse, and deprived of His beatific vision.

O my God! How was it possible that I, for so many years, have borne tranquilly the separation from Thee and Thy holy grace! O infinite Goodness, how long-suffering hast Thou shown Thyself to me! Henceforth, I shall love Thee above all things. I am deeply sorry for having offended Thee; I promise rather to die than to again offend Thee. Grant me the grace of holy perseverance, and do not permit that I should ever again fall into sin. Have compassion on the holy souls in Purgatory. I pray Thee, moderate their sufferings; shorten the time of their misery; call them soon unto Thee in Heaven, that they may behold Thee face to face, and forever love Thee. Mary, Mother of Mercy, come to their aid with thy powerful intercession, and pray for us also who are still in danger of eternal damnation.

(Pray 1 Our Father and 1 Hail Mary for the Holy Souls in Purgatory each day.)
